How to Choose Your Perfect Hydrofoil | DI LARA MOVE

The right hydrofoil is the one that suits your activity, speed, conditions and progression goals. Start with the sport, then narrow down board type, wing shape and area, mast length, fuselage and stabilizer.

Step 1. Choose your riding style

Pump foil / dock start: an efficient wing and compact pump board designed to maintain movement through body-powered pumping.

Wing foil: an appropriate buoyant board, hydrofoil and handheld wind wing; wind strength is a major sizing factor.

Surf / wake foil: a foil selected for wave or wake energy and turning response, with a suitable board.

SUP / downwind foil: a buoyant paddle-friendly board and foil matched to the conditions and paddling technique.

Step 2. Compare the front wings

Large area typically makes lower-speed lift more accessible, while smaller area tends to suit higher speeds and quicker maneuvering. Higher aspect ratio can improve glide efficiency, but may demand greater roll control and space to turn.

Step 3. Factor in your weight and the water

Rider mass, wind strength, swell, wave energy, current and water depth all influence the selection. Do not size an entire foil from body weight alone.

Step 4. Choose a mast for your conditions

Shorter mast options may be better suited to calmer water and limited clearance; taller choices offer more height above chop but require more water depth. Always leave generous clearance below the foil.

Step 5. Verify compatibility

Check board mount, mast adapter, fuselage interfaces, stabilizer and fasteners. Complete sets are useful when parts were designed to work together. If building from separate pieces, confirm a compatible configuration rather than assuming interchangeability.
