Sauna Bathing and Respiratory Disease: Evidence from Prospective Finnish Cohorts
Explore observational Finnish sauna studies on respiratory outcomes without confusing association with medical treatment.
Most sauna headlines focus on cardiovascular health. Finnish researchers have also followed sauna habits in relation to respiratory disease over decades.
A 25-year prospective cohort
A study of 1,935 middle-aged Finnish men followed participants for a median of 25.6 years. More frequent sauna bathing was associated with lower incidence of hospital-diagnosed respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and pneumonia, compared with infrequent sauna use.
Pneumonia specifically
Another analysis involving more than 2,200 men also reported an inverse association between sauna frequency and pneumonia risk across long-term follow-up. Later work examined inflammation alongside sauna frequency and found that frequent sauna bathing was associated with lower pneumonia risk even after accounting for high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and other variables.
Association is not treatment
These studies are valuable because of their long follow-up and detailed cohort data. They do not mean sauna treats asthma, COPD or pneumonia. Instead, they add respiratory outcomes to a growing list of questions being investigated around repeated passive heat exposure.
